Yesterday the 10th of April I started my last work experience at Meals on Wheels I was absolutely terrified because I`ve never cooked for anybody that I didn't know before and was scared I was going to mess everything up.
I got driven to the Leixlip GAA by my mum and was dropped off just inside the the grounds, I found the door that leads to the kitchen eventually after getting lost and walking around aimlessly for a few minuets there I met Bernie and two other ladies who were going to be helping me today.
I was then set to the task of cutting the cauliflower and taking off the bottom of them so that the ladies could boil them for the dinner, this was kinda frightening because I was scared I was going to slice my fingers open and embarrass myself in front of them. I eventually got it done * without slicing my fingers open and was very pleased to see I could do it.
I was then given the task of mashing the potatoes which was grand because I was used to doing it at home, I had to make sure all the lumps were gone and when they were to bring it over to the table and scoop it into the containers. I couldn`t do it, I kept trying to but it didn't work so instead I counted out 29 small containers and lids and 30 big containers and their lids.
After that we had break which was nice because I got to learn a little about my Co Workers over a cup of tea and biscuits. We then started dishing up the food making sure that any special requirements were ordered was done and then everybody else had a bit of meat, potatoes, cauliflower and cabbage, we then covered them gave them to the drivers, cleaned up and went home.

The Case of the missing Puppy.....
So I went into work over the midterm and it was a bit weird seeing as how I had the week off and then smack bang in the middle of it was work.
I got in at around ten to nine and went upstairs to the kitchen to see that we had a new member of the team, it was an abandoned rabbit that the vets were nursing back to health, I went downstairs stairs and started cleaning the animals dishes and the knives and forks that they used to give it to them.
During this I was introduced to Aoife who was a fith year doing work experience as well, we decided then that she would dry and I would finish washing, at the start it was awkward but soon we were talking to each other.
We then both went into the Kennels which was filled for the first time since I`ve been there and I found this dog that I wanted to seriously take, it was a small little Heinz puppy that was a stray but I swear it was THE most adorable puppy ever, she was so small she fitted into my hand.
Still there I swept the floors and then I got to take a Pomeranian, Irish greyhound and a Jack Russel for a walk around the vet`s which I can tell you raised a few eyes (Thanks Greyhound) before going back in, going upstairs and watching a surgery.
After lunch I swept the surgery floor, then got to take care (as in entertain) a Irish bloodhound who was bigger than me (seriously), after the owner I then helped the assistant vet sterilize wipes by placing them in a bag and sealing them closed by placing them in a machine and waiting till the blue light went off.
All in all it was a good day and I`m looking forward to the next. :)

My time at a slaughter factory.... (yes really)
Today in the vet I experience something for the first (and last) time, I got to go the factory where cows and sheep are slaughtered for human consumption.
Me and my fellow vet Kevin drove for half an hour to a little farm house where you wouldn't think a factory would be but was, before we got in we had to put on wellys hat and gloves and we were ready for whatever was coming.
Now before you read on you should know that I`m a vegetarian and have been for nine years now, so when I saw the cows I felt pretty awful about what was going to happen to them, Firstly we went into an office where we meet Bernard who`s job was to print off the herds passport to make sure that they have had their blood tests and tuberculosis and it was all clear so they were fit for consumption.
After that we then went to their slaughter line where... well you know they kill the animal, I learnt what they had to do to the cow.
Firstly they were shot in the head with a magnetic bullet in the brain (to knock them un- conscience) they are then properly killed by slitting their throats and letting them die by blood lost, they are then hooked up by this hook lifted up and then this man cuts off their hooves. Next then they get their skin pulls off and their head gets cut off, after it that they get cut in half and their guts that are edible are taken away on another belt, the ones that are not are left in a skip like container where a lady cuts off the fatty bits.
I can tell you one thing though, I was so thankful getting out of there one cause the meat and the next the smell was like.... I cant explain it without offending someone so I`m not finishing that sentence.
I finally got back to the vet and after watching a few consultations got to go home :)

My first day as a vet....
My first day of a vet..... what to say.
Firstly I was nervous, very very very nervous because I have never done anything like working in a vet so I had NO idea what I was going to do or what I would see.
When I arrived at Barrakgate Vet I was firstly introduced to Fiona the veterinary Nurse who then showed me around the vet.
We then had consultations where we had to make a dog sick due to the fact that he had eaten rat poison and it could kill him if we dint take it out. That was very disgusting seeing as I had to hold the dog`s bum (Yeah I`m being serious) and the dog refused to throw up until we injected this crystal soap stuff into his mouth 9 times.
I then got to go upstairs and watch a surgery take place, I was warned that if I felt like I was gonna puke then I should go get air (I didn't though) they then started on neutering three cats and two dogs. I was then "Lucky" enough to get to be shown where the Fallopian tube was in the dogs and cats and how they made sure that the eggs would`nt pass through anymore by tying a knot with this special thread.
After that I thankfully got lunch were I was greeted to Foxy and Petra another nurse. I then ate and got to see more consultations before going home.

WORK :D
I started off my work by arriving in just before my supervisor and being told that I was very enthusiastic by my co- workers.
I then put my coat and bag in the locker and went downstairs to be given an important job.
What was this important job you may ask.... it was...... checking that a persons card info matched up with their info on the card they wrote out for us when singing up, this was ok because I already knew what to do so I didn't need to pester the other workers.
I then said hello to the teacher who taught people English, she laughed and joked saying that I could run this place if I wanted to, Lol my face when they said that (please look at the bottom to see how my face looked) , thankfully everyone laughed and then they all got back to the jobs they were supposed to do.
It was then time for lunch which was going ok until..... I had to go upstairs and open the door that led to my the staff room, OH MY GOD I had the code but the door wouldn't open and EVERY student was staring at me trying to get the door open. Eventually I did though and I went to enjoy my break.
After break I was asked by my supervisor to look up any Young Adult Fiction I recommended should be in the library my reaction was professional but inside I was like (see picture below)
I then did this until the public was allowed into the library and from there I as working constantly :)

Today is the 21/11/12 and it is a wedensday.
I walked to work today and was quite early somehow, I realsied this because when I arrived at the library the doors were locked and I couldnt get in (classic Roisin) I had to ring the library number twice before someone answered and let me in,and in that time a little Bridget`s student told me that the library wouldnt be open until twelve (WRONG, it actually opened to the public at 2:00pm)(BOOM) so I had to tell her that in actual fact I was working here and that this is when I had to be here by.
When I was let in I said hello to everyone (Meave and Mary) and put my bag into my locker, I then went downstairs and found out what I was going to be doing today, firstly I was asked very nicely if I could shelve some books, now if you did`nt already know that I dislike shelving well.... now you do ;). I did do them and even found all the Dewy number books places (thank you thank you very much) without having to ask anyone where this was.
After that I was assigned a very important job, looking through all the 2010 registered people and making sure that A) anyone who had internet permission on their card had internet permission on the system and B) if they gave us their email adress so that we can inform them that their book has arrived. I did all of the A`s and B`s which took around an hour and a bit and afterwards I was hungry.
We then opened up the to the public and everything was a blur of people taking things out and giving things back.
